I had a boyfriend that had RLS and he took calcium pills before bed. do you take that?
And Todd, your legs can keep me awake anytime.. ;)
      • Very cool.. a tribe for freaks like me.

I've had RLS my whole life and as I've gotten older it's gotten a bit worse. Once while sitting on the couch, my feet up on the coffee table and the notebook sitting on my thighs my leg jerked and flipped the computer onto the floor. Thank goodness it wasn't damaged.

I spent most of my life not thinking much about my crazy legs.. it was just a twitch I got sometimes. Never did I think it was a 'condition'.

Then my spouse goes and looks on the internet because she was curious about these spasms I get. She announced to me that there was a name for this peculiar issue I had. I was genuinely surprised by this. Suddenly I had a "condition".

I don't take anything for it. Only some days does it really bother me that much. Typically I just pound, hard, with my fists on my leg muscles to relieve the odd creeping feeling that I get on the bad days.

wow . . . i didn't expect so many people to have/know about this. There are a couple medications that doctors will perscribe for it . . . i have mirapex but it takes like an hour to kick in. What works best for me is actually percocet. (I have it becasue of my back problems and surgery) However, if you are under 30, you will have a hard time getting a doc to prescribe pain pills for this. But they work most incredibly. also, i recently heard about the calcuim, i think i will try that as well
  • You are not alone. I've had this condition off and on for many years but only lately since I injured my back has it worsened. My Father and his Father before him has or had the same problem. Must be something in the genes? Some nights are worse than others but I'll have some form of it every night at bedtime.I find that a good strong marguarita or sex or both ( especially both )helps take some of the edge off.Once I go into sound sleep on these nights it doesn't seem as bad.

mine got much worse after my back injury as well . . . in fact it felt like it emanated from that exact area of my back. i have since had surgery & the RLS seems to have decreased, though by no means has it gone away.
      • I do find a calcium/magnesium suppliment to help a little.
My husband generally leaves the bed in the middle of the night to sleep somewhere else. Not only do I get one crazy leg going on, I also cannot stop stretching my muscles all night long. I don't think I hold still for more than 5 minutes ever.
        • Wow!!! Other people get this too! I first experienced it after taking oh, shoot, the cold medicine with the "plop, plop, fizz, fizz" jingle.
Now, if I eat too much sugar after 8 at night, or too much caffeine after 4, or am just too amped before bed, it hits.
I have a horrible time holding still period. I constantly feel like I need to stretch, unless I'm *really* distracted - good movie or *very* absorbing task.
  • Hi, just found this tribe.
I was diagnosed with the severe version of RLS 2 years ago. My symptoms had actually started some 20 years ago and went from a few contractions of an arm or leg to lasting from 6pm to 5am every night now.
I had no idea what was going on before my diagnosis.
Recent bloodwork has found that I'm severly calcium and iron deficient. Some research on the subject seems to indicate that these things contribute to the problem. My iron is so low that my doctor says if it drops 2 more points I'll need a blood transfusion. :-( I've also found that cutting way back on daily caffiene intake and eliminating it alltogether after 6pm greatly reduces the symptoms for me.
My Dr. started me on taking Requip about a month ago and finally I can rest at night. The packaging says that this is the only FDA approved treatment for severe to moderate RLS symptoms. I would like to hear from anyone else who takes this if they'll respond. It works beautifully for me but causes some mild nausea.
Anyway, Todd, you are by no means alone...we are the many and the insomnic. sigh....nice to meet you.
    Tracey
